If you are reading this, you are probably wondering about willpower. You are searching for answers that will empower you to take control of your life and begin charting a course to become the master of your destiny. You have some goals or desires you want to accomplish, and this article will help. And to make sure of that, I will start by answering the question, what is willpower? But be warned there is no shortage of answers to this question.

According to www.merriam-webster.com, willpower is the ability to control your actions, emotions, and urges. They say willpower is having a strong determination that allows you to do something difficult, and I agree with that, but both of those definitions are extremely basic. You see, there is more you need to know about willpower.

Willpower is one of the six intellectual faculties given to you at birth. These intellectual faculties are not discussed very often in schools and universities, or any place like that, but these faculties were naturally given to you to help you navigate life, master your creation, attain prosperity, and become the best version of you possible.

Here’s a list of your most valuable 6 intellectual faculties:

  1. Intuition
  2. Imagination
  3. Perception
  4. Memory
  5. Logic
  6. Will

Master your 6 intellectual faculties, and you’ll be able to live and enjoy any lifestyle you desire. You can be rich, wealthy, famous, or amazingly successful. When you think about your intellectual faculties, think about intellectual property rights and creativity, the things that make people super successful and rich, and you will have a glimpse of what’s possible. I find it odd they don't teach you more about these intellectual faculties in our schools and universities.

But let’s get back to willpower because willpower gives you the ability to choose and decide what you will or will not do, what you will or will not sacrifice, and how far you will or will not go to be, do and achieve or have all that you want and desire. And if you desire to live and enjoy a better life, if your life is not perfect or quite what you want it to be, you may want to read this article twice and accept the offer at the end.

If you believe in freedom and you believe that your ancestors fought, strove, and died or sacrificed so that you could enjoy freedom and autonomy, with autonomy being your right to govern and make decisions for yourself in-leu of being told exactly what to do by some external force or controlling government master, then you’re going to want to know more about will power. And if you believe that you were born for a greater purpose and given certain gifts, talents, and abilities to express yourself and become the best version of you possible, especially if you believe you are more than just a robot or slave to the system, you’re going to want to read this article twice and join me on a coaching call and strategy session.

Willpower gives you the ability to become the master of your own reality.

To better understand willpower, let’s break it down into two words, Will and Power: Will is the faculty by which a person decides on and affirms an intended future action. It is a word that best describes an intention, desire, or wish to do something or make something happen in the future.

You have the power to say what you will or will not do. And here is how it works, you simply say, I will, or I will not do something, or here is how much I will or will not do, or how far I will or will not go, and just like that, you take back control of your life.

There is a quote by Les Brown that I really enjoy. It highlights the power of will. I call it Leviticus because it reminds me of the biblical characters from the book of Levi. In biblical times the tribe of Levi was responsible for bringing the word and keeping the people on the right footing.

I believe this quote by Les Brown does just that while hinting at the power of will.

If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it, to work day-and-night for it, to give up your time, your peace, and your sleep for it. If all that you dream-and scheme is about it, and life seems useless and worthless without it. If you will gladly sweat for it, fret for it and plan for it, and lose all your terror of the opposition for it. If you will simply go after that thing that you want with all your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope, confidence, and a stern pertinacity. If neither cold, nor poverty, nor famine, nor gout, or sickness and pain of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want.
If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it, with the help of God, You Will Get It! – Les Brown, Leviticus.

Did you get it?

It is all about Will. And will is your ability to decide what you will or will not do, how much you will or will not sacrifice, and how far you will or will not go to be, do and achieve or have all that you desire in life, nothing more.

Now let’s talk about Power: Power is the amount of energy you will or will not exert to get what you want and desire. Most people will not exert a lot of energy to have and enjoy the things they say they want.

But why is that?

The answer is simple. Most people do not really want the things they say they want. They say they want certain things because it sounds good. They hear other people saying they want these things, so kind of like, monkey see monkey do, they say the same things too. Often, they do this because the things are popular, and it makes them feel good to say they want it. It makes them look good in the eyes of others, and occasionally the things may even taste and smell good, but they’re not really that good or healthy.

They don’t really want the things they say they do, and for that reason, they’re not willing to work very hard or for very long to have and enjoy or experience them. Now, if the things are cheap or easy to come by, they’ll have the things they want or at least the things they say they want, but those things never bring with them lasting success or happiness.

There are two reasons for that.

  • The things are not what they really wanted, and
  • The things came with little to no effort. Meaning they didn’t have to work very hard for it, and people don’t appreciate things they don’t have to work very hard for.

So, what is the solution to getting the things you really want and desire?

  1. Decide what you really want and why.
  2. See in your mind what it is that you really want and desire.
  3. Believe that you can have it.
  4. Create a clear mental picture of the thing you want.
  5. Allow that thing to become an all-out consuming desire.
  6. Get help as you must but take persistent and continuously improving actions to have and enjoy what you want and desire.
  7. Refuse to give up or quit before getting what you want.

This will all require a fair amount of planning, re-planning, trial, and error. You are not going to get what you want on your first try. If you do, you probably set your goals way too low. Some people set low goals because they’re afraid to challenge themselves, and they don’t want to lose or look ridiculous.

They don’t know how silly they look playing on the kiddie court. But that’s willpower. They are constantly making decisions to play small, not overexert themselves, and stay within their limits to avoid being ridiculed and ostracized. It is amazing how many things people will or will not do to avoid being ridiculed, ostracized, and cast out from society.

Most people want to fit in, and that’s why most people will never do anything extraordinary. It’s the reason most people feel trapped and confined. They are not living their best life. They are living a reality that has been imposed on them by others. And they’ve been doing it so long that they’re stuck in a perpetual state of low will.

They are thinking that willpower is the problem. The problem is that they're stuck in the habit of not knowing what they want, not knowing how to get it, and not wanting to be embarrassed or criticized by others. They need rehab. They need help. They need a coach or someone outside their immediate circle of family and friends to help them figure it out, create a plan, and help them adapt a think and grow rich mindset.

Coaching and adapting a think and grow rich mindset is an entirely different conversation. It’s not one I’ll write about in this article, but if you would like to interview a coach and learn how coaching can help you master your intellectual faculties to recreate your life, join me this week for a 45-Minute Think and Grow Rich Coaching Interview and Strategy Session.
