Answers From Unexpected Sources - Are You Open or Ready?

Why Staying Open to Learning Is the Leadership Advantage

leadership & influence Jul 19, 2021

Confidence is useful. But when it is not balanced with openness, it creates limitations.

Many people move through life assuming they already know enough. They rely on past experience, familiarity, and what they believe to be current knowledge.

But growth requires something different.

It requires the willingness to learn—even in moments when you expect to already have the answer.

That lesson became clear in a simple moment from childhood.

A Moment That Changed Perspective

At twelve years old, confidence comes easily.

I listened to music daily, followed pop culture, and believed I had a strong grasp of what was current and relevant. Like many at that age, I assumed I knew more than I actually did.

One day, our favorite radio station, WWRL 1600, hosted a contest called Name That Tune. The format was simple: the DJ would say two lines of a song, and the contestant had to provide the next two lines.

When I called in and made it through as the selected contestant, I was ready.

Or so I thought.

The DJ began:

“Summertime and the livin' is easy.”

And in that moment, I froze.

My mind went completely blank.

Standing nearby, my mother calmly said:

“The fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high.”

I repeated her words into the phone, uncertain—but correct.

I won the contest.

But more importantly, I learned something that stayed with me.

The Lesson: Stay Open to Learning

In that moment, something became clear.

Knowledge is not always where you expect it to be.

Experience does not guarantee awareness.

And confidence does not eliminate the need to listen.

My assumption that I “knew everything” in that area was incorrect. The answer came from someone I had not expected in that moment.

That is how learning often works.

It shows up outside your assumptions.

Why This Matters in Leadership

This lesson extends far beyond a childhood story.

In leadership, the inability to remain open creates blind spots.

Leaders who assume they already know:

  • miss useful input
  • overlook better solutions
  • limit the potential of their teams
  • slow down growth and improvement

On the other hand, leaders who remain open—while still maintaining standards and judgment—create an environment where learning continues.

They are more adaptable. More informed. More effective over time.

Openness Is Not a Lack of Confidence

There is a misconception that being open to learning signals weakness or uncertainty.

In reality, the opposite is true.

Strong individuals are secure enough to admit they do not know everything. They are willing to listen, evaluate, and adjust when necessary.

This does not mean accepting everything without question. It means remaining receptive to useful information regardless of where it comes from.

That balance—confidence with openness—is what strengthens judgment.

How to Stay Open While Maintaining Standards

Being open to learning does not mean being easily influenced. It means being intentional about how you process information.

That includes:

  • listening without immediate dismissal
  • evaluating ideas based on merit, not source
  • separating ego from learning
  • remaining curious in unfamiliar situations
  • continuing to refine your understanding over time

This approach allows you to grow without losing direction.

Learning Can Come From Anywhere

One of the most valuable realizations in growth is this:

You do not control where insight comes from.

It may come from:

  • a mentor
  • a peer
  • a team member
  • a family member
  • or an unexpected moment

What matters is whether you are open enough to recognize it when it appears.

That openness increases your ability to adapt, improve, and make better decisions over time.

Final Thought

Growth is not just about acquiring more knowledge. It is about remaining receptive to it.

The moment you assume you have nothing left to learn is often the moment progress begins to slow.

Stay open.

Stay aware.

And remember that the right insight does not always come from where you expect.

But when it does, it can change how you think—and how you lead.
